Site Analysis

Due Date: November 26, 2013 at 12 noon.

Assignment Description: This assignment build on the discussions we have been having about the role that sound and popular music play in structuring the places in which we live and the spaces we traverse in our everyday lives. In order to complete the assignment, you must pick a particular location in Toronto (the York campus is off limits). Your goal is to provide an analysis of the ways in which popular music and the management of sound contribute to the way that the space is used and experienced; you will also provide some historical context for the site that you have selected.

To complete the assignment, you will need the following information:

  • Location (the street address as close as possible);
  • A description of the site that you are analyzing 100-150 words;
  • An overview of the history of the site (approx. 500-700 words);
  • An analysis of the way in which sound and music are employed at this site to produce certain experiences or to encourage (or discourage) certain activities (approx. 800 words). Be sure to use concepts from the course readings and discussions.

Supplementary media materials – i.e. images, videos, newspapers, magazines, fliers, promotional material – should be included as part of the assignment.

Be sure to properly source your material when you upload it on to the course site using references to original material or existing scholarship.

The assignment is to be submitted online, using the course website.
