Short Reflective Assignment

As mentioned in the final class of the term, there is one final short assignment related to your work from last semester. The goal of this assignment is to ask you to look back on the work submitted by you and your colleagues and to reflect on these findings.

Before you get to the assignment, some logistical preliminaries.

  • The assignment is to by submitted by 4pm, Monday, January 13th, 2014. A dropbox for the assignment will be opened up on Moodle for Friday. You can also email me a copy since Moodle in case this doesn’t work well.
  • You must submit the assignment as a word document, in order to make sure that I can open it.

The assignment is as follows:

If you read newspapers or talk to people who live in Greater Toronto Area, you will realize that there are a number of discussions going on about the future of the region. These range from discussions about transportation to economic growth to the quality of life of people living in the area. Over the past semester, you have been engaged in researching the musical and sonic life of people living in this area. This assignment asks you to consider the findings of your colleagues and to synthesize them into a more coherent analysis of the state of musical culture in the area.

For this assignment, you are asked to read through the findings of your colleagues and produce an analysis of sonic and musical life in the Toronto region. Based on this analysis, you are then asked to put forward four recommendations that relate to music and/or sound that should be pursued in order to improve the well being, prosperity and quality of life of your fellow citizens.

The parameters of the assignment is as follows:

  • You must draw upon at least 10 assignments that have been submitted for this class to support your analysis and recommendations. Only one of these can be your own work. You can find all of the assignments via this map.
  • Your recommendations should be as explicit as possible and be clearly based upon the evidence you have presented in your analysis.
  • The assignment should be no longer than 1200 words in length. For this assignment, length counts!

We will discuss your recommendations in class on the 16th of January.
